By Brian Friel
Directed by Guest Director Rachel Burttram Powers
Set in the late summer of 1936 in rural County Donega, Brian Friel’s Olivier Award‑winning play is a haunting memory of one family’s struggle and joy.
Through the eyes of the grown Michael Evans, we return to the small cottage where, as a seven‑year‑old boy, he lived with his mother and her four sisters—five extraordinary women bound together by poverty, faith, and fierce love. As they care for Michael and their frail brother, “Uncle” Jack, a former missionary priest, the world around them shifts.
During the Festival of Lughnasa—when pagan ritual and Christian belief collide—the Mundy sisters laugh, fight, dance, dream, and cling to each other against the oncoming tide of change.
At once lyrical and heartbreaking, Dancing at Lughnasa is an astonishing evocation of memory, resilience, and the fragile bonds of family.
