Color Study Cards Workshop with John Kennedy

A great way to improve your art is to do color studies. Determining what colors to use in our art is best done in preparation, before we put brush to canvas. Inspiration comes from other art that we like, color schemes that excite us, and often from random selections that look great. Cataloging those color patterns is a great way to be sure you can access them in the future, and not have to reinvent the color scheme with every piece of art.

In this workshop, we will prepare Color Study Sheets and Color Study Cards that we can use in our art. Our inspiration can be from magazines or other art that we like.

Color Study Sheets – are art inspired color selections that we can replicate to recapture the mood of a color scheme when we need to.

Color Study Cards – are small “playing cards” we will make after filling a page of watercolor paper with color and marks. You will be surprised at the inspiration you can find when you parse out pieces of a larger work.

The intention is not to copy other art, but to be able to replicate the mood of a painting or photograph by carefully analyzing the colors within. Everything is provided, but feel free to bring your own paints, that way the studies can be done using your existing palette.
