WITH AN EXCLUSIVE VIDEO INTRODUCTION BY ANDREW COTTON, NORTH DEVON'S INFLUENTIAL BIG WAVE SURFER

After a brush with death, Maya Gabeira makes history in the male- dominated world of big wave surfing.

_MAYA and the WAVE_, a feature length documentary, tells the extraordinary story of Maya Gabeira, the first woman to surf the giant wave in Nazaré, Portugal. She nearly drowns - and is ridiculed by the male big wave surfers who dominate the sport. Three spine surgeries and five years later, she surfs the biggest wave a woman has ever surfed. When her accomplishment is disregarded, Maya enlists the help of her fans to fight for recognition --and becomes the first female surfer honored with a Guinness World Record in big wave surfing.

MAYA GABEIRA is the most accomplished female big wave surfer of all time.

She holds the first ever Guinness World Record for the biggest wave surfed by a woman, measured at 68ft. In 2020 she broke her own record and established the new women’s World Record at 73.5 feet. She made history in 2020 by surfing the largest wave overall (male or female) for the first time in professional surfing. Maya won the WSL Big Wave Award 7 times, more than any man or woman in the history of the sport. In 2020 she became the first woman to compete alongside men in the main event at the WSL Nazaré Tow Challenge. Committed to protecting the ocean she loves, Maya serves on the Board of Directors of Oceana, and as UNESCO’s Ambassador for the Ocean. Born in Brazil but a resident of the world, Maya is currently based in Nazaré, home of the biggest waves on the planet. She continues to break barriers and is a pioneer who shows that women are capable of anything.
