DC Bluegrass Union Songwriter Showcase • The second Wednesday of each month, this month featuring:
Andrew McKnight • Rachel May • Mike Hamilton
Since permanently leaving his corporate environmental engineering career in 1996, award-winning folk and Americana artist Andrew McKnight's musical journey has traced nearly a million miles of blue highways, and earned him a wealth of critical acclaim and enthusiastic fans for his captivating performances and ten recordings. The singer/songwriter, guitarist and storytender's latest solo project Treasures in My Chest is an album and book about his singular experiences exploring his family history, as well as a fine introductory how-to manual. Hailing from the historic village of Lincoln, Virginia, Andrew also teaches guitar and songwriting, offers a variety of school and adult programs and workshops, and is a consultant for people learning to use DNA for genealogy and family history research. His music is in several documentaries and podcasts, and he has written songs with kindergarteners as well as one on one with veterans to help healing their PTSD. Equal parts vulnerable as she is cheeky, Rachel May’s mystic soul-folk shines through a uniquely feminine lens. Hailing out of Baltimore, Maryland, her songs are lyrically driven by a roots-deep love for musical storytelling and self-expression. With her earliest influences attributed to the works of Todd Snider, Joni Mitchell, The Grateful Dead, and Johnny Cash, it's no wonder her own music is curious, exploratory, and poignant in each song’s unraveling of itself. In May 2024, Rachel had the privilege of playing her first music festival, Charm City Bluegrass. Shortly after, she released her first single, "Janis" on all streaming platforms. Since then, she has played shows and festivals in Baltimore, Virginia, Delaware and beyond, singing solo, with friends, and notably with electric jam-band 5 Spot. www.rachelmaymusic.com.
Mike Hamilton grew up in Titusville, Pennsylvania. In the 1960s he was listening to Jimmy Rogers, the Carter Family, Hank Williams, Stanley Brothers, Bob Dylan, the Beatles and the British Invasion. Mike started playing music in high school and formed a band and began writing songs. Throughout the 1970s, Mike toured as a solo act performing his original music at concerts, festivals, clubs and special events. In 1978 he moved to the Washington, DC area, where he formed several bands, including Desire, No Doubt Crypto, and others, and founded the Joe Bag O' Donuts (BMI) music publishing company. In the next decade he turned his talents to producing and engineering his own music and regional acts, founding his own production company, BigHouse Productions. He has recorded several albums of original music, and formed one of his current bands, The Mike Hamilton Band, as a vehicle to perform and record his songs. Mike considers himself to be the luckiest guy in the world to have had the musical experiences he’s had and the wonderful friendships he’s developed through the universal language of music. From his life experiences and influences it's no wonder Mike is as much a storyteller as a songwriter. It's also no wonder that the subjects nearest and dearest to his heart are reflected in his songs of the working man's everyday life with its struggles and triumphs, fears and joys. www.mikehamiltonband.com.
