Book Club Discussion

The Josephine School Community Museum Book Club meets at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 29, to discuss “Snow-Storm in August: The Struggle for American Freedom and Washington’s Race Riot of 1835” by Jefferson Morley. Special guest moderator is historian Kortnei Morris.

“Snow-Storm in August,” a historical nonfiction work published in 2013, tells the story of what is likely the capital’s earliest documented race riot – the Snow Riot. It paints a vibrant picture of antebellum Washington, D.C., while also taking the reader through the various elements that acted as a catalyst for the riot.

Kortnei Morris has a passion for amplifying the rich history of African Americans, focusing primarily on Black history from the Early Republic through the Reconstruction eras. She studied French and Political Science at Howard University and is currently completing a certification in Public History and Historic Preservation.

“Snow-Storm in August” is available at libraries and book shops.
