Welcome to our October FMV Book Club meeting!
This month, we're shifting from memoir to myth — from personal survival to collective power.
October’s Book Pick: The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna
Genre: Afrofantasy / Young Adult Fiction
From: Sierra Leone → USA
About the book:
In a brutal society obsessed with purity, sixteen-year-old Deka bleeds gold — and is cast out as dangerous. But when she is offered a place among a band of girl warriors, she begins to uncover a deeper truth about the system that condemned her.
Set in a vividly imagined West African–inspired world, The Gilded Ones is a story of exile, chosen family, sacred rage, and transformation.
While last month’s memoir (How Dare the Sun Rise) helped us connect to the personal costs of conflict in DR Congo, this month we move into symbolic territory — exploring gendered violence, institutional power, and liberation through fantasy.
In many ways, The Gilded Ones is an allegory: for girls marked as dangerous simply for existing; for the violence done to bodies that do not comply; and for the fierce solidarities that emerge when women choose each other over the systems that harm them.
This book helps us explore the cultural roots of silencing, the cost of exile, and the meaning of power reclaimed.
Haven’t read the book? Come anyway!
Our discussions are always open — whether you’ve finished the book, skimmed it, or just want to learn. We’ll talk about the themes and the global context, together. Bring a friend.
