February’s Book Pick: Your Silence Will Not Protect You by Audre Lorde
Genre: Essays & Poetry
From: USA / Caribbean diaspora

About the book:
This posthumous collection brings together some of Lorde’s most powerful work — essays, speeches, and poems that speak on racism, feminism, lesbian love, motherhood, anger, difference, and survival.

Her writing is sharp and loving, political and personal. She reminds us that language can be a blade, a balm, or a bridge — but never neutral.

Why we chose it:
Audre Lorde is foundational to FMV’s values. As a Black lesbian poet and warrior, she gave generations of women of color permission to speak, to rage, and to refuse erasure.

For Black History Month, we return to the root. Lorde reminds us that silence is never neutral, and that speaking — even when your voice shakes — is a radical act of care and resistance.

Haven’t read the book? Come anyway!
Our discussions are always open — whether you’ve finished the book, skimmed it, or just want to learn. We’ll talk about the themes and the global context, together. Bring a friend.
