Welcome farmer, author, and illustrator Katie Kulla to the Readings Gallery as she shares invaluable advice and insights to farmer-parents from her newest book, Farm-Raised Kids: Parenting Strategies for Balancing Family Life with Running a Small Farm or Homestead! Co-owner of Boldly Grown Farm, Amy Frye will be joining our author for the afternoon.
In Farm-Raised Kids, Katie Kulla offers her own hard-won wisdom, gleaned from more than a decade of raising kids while running a CSA farm with her husband. The book features invaluable advice and insights from farmer-parents and diverse farm families sharing a wealth of practical tips and ideas for how to engage children on the farm.
Katie Kulla is a Western Washington University alumni, farmer, author, and illustrator writing about farming, seasonal eating, nature, and family life. She and her husband started farming in Oregon in 2006 and have two children who were born on the farm and are homeschooled. Katie co-hosts the Growing for Market podcast and her writing has been published in Taproot, Growing for Market Magazine, Farmer-ish, Geez, and GreenPrints. She can be found at katiekulla.com.
Amy Frye is co-owner of Boldly Grown Farm, a certified organic vegetable farm in Washington's Skagit Valley. Over the past decade, she and her husband, Jacob, have transformed an old dairy farm into a thriving 40-acre vegetable operation—complete with two spirited kids, a bustling wholesale business, a winter CSA, and a year-round farm stand. Originally from Minnesota, Amy holds a Master's in Resource Management from the University of British Columbia, where she met Jacob at the campus farm. She's a passionate advocate for local food and farmers—always bringing a side of humor (and a lot of radicchio) to the table.
