Join Jean Waight in the Readings Gallery as she answers the question, 'What happens when a lodge isn't only a place for a recreation getaway, but captures your deepest affections—even imprints itself on you?' You go back again and again to find out why.
From her first ski trip, Jean Waight is entranced by the beauty and welcoming feel of Mount Hood's 1937 lodge. The years bring weather, a weasel, and an unwitting plunge. But Timberline Lodge also whispers, which she hears after she has to give up skiing. When the snow hounds head for the slopes, the past comes out to play, and linocut murals invite her to step into scenes of her own family history. In Timberline's Embrace reflects on this national treasure, how close the lodge once came to being lost, and what its magic owes to generations of caring hands.
Jean Waight is a Bellingham writer, formerly working in communications and community relations. She writes personal history with a sociological bent, often exploring the tension between the individual and social belonging. Her previous book is The River Beyond the Dam (2023).
