A class for tinkerers and image makers (aspiring or seasoned)
Building a pinhole camera ventures into a process of photography that allows us several unique opportunities. The act of building a pinhole camera, testing exposure, developing paper and film in the darkroom is nothing short of fun, energizing, engaging, mysterious and teaches us the essence of photography like no other process can. It’s just that - about the process and being immersed in a sense of awe, possibility and mystery.
Maybe back in elementary school you built your own camera from an oatmeal tin and recall the magical the experience. In this 7-week class, we’ll build our own cameras from scratch—the sky being the limit! We’ll then learn how to expose images from our camera and develop the paper negatives in the darkroom. After testing and refining, we’ll move to exposing 4”x5” sheet film in our cameras, learning to contact print the results. This course is a springboard for your own potential explorations toward the possibilities in this unique —and root form—of image making. An inspiring, fun, informative and invigorating photography experience. All levels of image makers welcome—just bring your inspiration.

Considered ‘an old timer’ having learned in the era of analog, large format cameras and ‘wet’ darkroom photography, the fundamentals between those foundations of image creation and today’s digital devices have not changed. For ingredients, we need knowledge on what makes a well made image, how to see and use light, composition, framing, and timing as well as maintaining a quiet, clear sense of vision while sprinkling a little fun on top to result in elevating our images to the next level of inspiration."
