About the event

Eqabe Imbola
Join South African-born poet and playwright Nandi Jola for a powerful performance in the Ulster Museum.

In her piece Umngqungqo wenthombentle (Rhythm of a Beautiful Girl), Jola blends spoken word, movement, and storytelling to bring to life the story of Sarah Baartman, a Khoisan woman who journeyed to Ireland in the early 19th century. Retrace Sarah’s footsteps through Limerick and Dublin, and follow the trail of human trafficking, looting and enslavement.

By connecting King Williamstown in South Africa to King Williamstown in Ireland, Jola uncovers links between the two histories and asks us to look inward as well as outward.

This work is inspired in part by Nandi’s exploration of South African items in the National Museums NI collections, reimagining their story through Sarah Baartman’s life and legacy.

Please meet in the Modern History Gallery on Friday 17th October at 14:00. No booking needed.
