The conference “Themes of the New Romanian Drama on Stage”, presented by theatre critic Oana Cristea Grigorescu, offers a comprehensive overview of the evolution and identity of Romanian drama over the past two decades. Through the analysis of seven representative plays by contemporary authors, the talk explores how Romanian dramaturgy has responded to the social, political, and moral challenges of post-1989 society. The selected works highlight issues such as family and personal trauma, recent history, collective memory, gender-based violence, and interethnic tensions, offering a vivid portrait of a society in transformation. Featuring writers from different backgrounds—Romanian, Hungarian, and German—the conference showcases the multicultural character of Romania’s theatrical landscape and invites international audiences to discover the richness, urgency, and artistic power of the country’s new drama.
