Free Class: Fire Resilient Landscapes - Best Management Practices

This is part 2 of a 3 part class series presented by City of Austin Fire Mitigation Specialist Jonathan Wright

This class focuses on practical steps and ongoing strategies that homeowners can use to reduce wildfire risk around their property.
With the increasing risk of wildfires, especially in the wildland-urban interface, proactive landscape management is key to protecting homes and communities.

Fire Facts:
• Texas had the second-largest area burned by wildfires, with around 1.3 million acres impacted in 2024.
• Embers can travel up to 1.5 miles away from a a wildfire via the wind.
• 90% of structures consumed by a wildfire are due to embers

About the speaker:
Jonathan Wright works as a Wildfire Mitigation Specialist with AFD's Wildfire Division providing outreach and education to the public. He studied forestry at Cal Poly Humboldt and graduated with a degree in Wildland Fuels Management. He started in Vegetation Management as a Consulting Utility Forester (CUF) for Pacific Gas & Electric and also contracted for AE as a Utility Vegetation Manager (UVM) - Specialist.
