About the event

Portland Choir & Orchestra Presents: Johannes Brahms: Ein Deutches Requiem
The 150 musicians of Portland Choir & Orchestra have been delighting audiences with inspiring choral and orchestral music for 20 years. Thousands attend PCO’s wide variety of concert programs including the Celebration of Christmas, masterworks for choir and orchestra based on sacred texts, and patriotic and pops-style concerts that celebrate humankind’s rich heritage of family, music, faith, and liberty.

PCO has performed the National Anthem at Trail Blazer games and has performed with the Newport Symphony Orchestra, the Willamette Falls Symphony, and with national stars like Grammy-nominated violinist Jenny Oaks Baker, Tabernacle Choir Organist Clay Christiansen, and Broadway actor Dallyn Vail Bayles. Local celebrities such as Bill Schonely, Ray Summers, and Edmund Stone have also collaborated with PCO.

Enjoying a reputation of offering some of the finest, most uplifting choral and orchestral concerts in the greater Portland area, PCO is led by Artistic Director, Dr. David Thomas and Dr. Edward Higgins, Orchestra Director.

The Brahms’ Requiem, as it is commonly known, dominates the requiem category and is Johannes Brahms’ most celebrated work. It is a large-scale masterpiece for chorus, orchestra, and soloists in seven movements and will feature guest artists Stacey Murdock as baritone and Madison Barton-Holloway as soprano. Instead of the traditional Latin text recited at funerals and used by composers for centuries, Brahms chose words that offer consolation for the living. He set psalms and other passages from the Bible leaving out all forms of dogma. It became an enormous success and changed his life.

Sponsored by: Paul Hart in loving tribute of his late wife, Jan Jacobsen, local artist.
