The American Kennel Club's (AKC®) Canine Good Citizen® (CGC®) test is a certification program that evaluates a dog's basic obedience and good manners in a relaxed, non-competitive environment. Taking the CGC test can benefit dogs and owners in several ways, including fostering a stronger bond, teaching valuable life skills, and potentially opening doors to therapy dog work or other advanced training opportunities.

The CGC® test consists of 10 items:
1. Accepting a friendly stranger
2. Sitting politely for petting
3. Appearance and grooming
4. Out for a walk
5. Walking through a crowd
6. Sit and down on cue and stay in place
7. Coming when called
8. Reaction to another dog
9. Reaction to distraction
10. Supervised separation
Do I and my dog have to attend an AKC CGC Course before testing?
While not mandatory, a CGC course can help you both learn the 10 required items for the test.
