About the event

Kintsugi Workshop led by Art Therapist Tara DeLuca
The Art of Renewal Through Pottery Repair

About this Event

Join us Saturday, July 19th for a Kintusgi workshop!

During the Kintsugi workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn, create and share. They will learn about this historic art form and how it applies to each person. They will then be guided through a modern approach and break, paint and rebuild their own bowl- showing and creating a connection and ownership of their journey. Once the bowl is painted, participants highlight the cracks with gold glue making it unique to them, and more beautiful than it once was. Participants will also have the opportunity to share collectively or in small groups, conversing about how we have all been broken in various ways, and how there is strength in the growth of the rebuild. As an Art Therapist, Tara offers opportunities for connection through the art, relating it to self, and self healing of putting our own pieces back together.

Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. If a bowl is broken, rather than discarding the pieces, the fragments are put back and the cracks are adorned with gold. There are no attempts to hide the damage, instead, it is highlighted. The practice has come to represent the idea that beauty can be found in imperfection. The breakage is an opportunity and applying this kind of thinking to instances of challenges or β€œbreakage” in our own lives can be helpful.

Join us for a unique offering that brings the essence of modern Kintsugi to each workshop led by Art Therapist Tara DeLuca.

During this workshop you will use contemporary materials and approaches. Each participant will connect with their bowl, break it, confront the damage and take ownership of the pieces that remain by painting and glueing them back together.

The bowl will be changed forever, just as each person is through their own personal experiences.

  • What was once broken does not always stay that way
  • Broken, repaired, and new
  • Calming, shared experience, self care
  • The concept expresses how the passage of time can further increase the beauty in the imperfect.Β

β€œInstead of masking the flaws, a Japanese way of seeing things is that by highlighting the cracks, the piece becomes stronger, more beautiful, and easier to use.”
