About the event

First Free Sunday at Magnolia Mound
Magnolia Mound offers free self-guided first Sunday of each month. Free special highlighted tours during the season as described below.

Jan. 5 + Feb. 2 + April 6 + May 4 + June 1 + July 6 / 1-4 p.m.

Black History Month - Feb. 2
During Black History Month, visit Magnolia Mound for a special "back of the big house" self-guided tour, which focuses on the lives of the enslaved community. Explore the unique walking trail highlighting the lives of early African American East Baton Rouge pioneers in business, law, medicine, education, and religion. Special tours begin on Sunday, Feb. 2, and continue throughout the month.

Women’s History Month - March 2 / 2 p.m. - This first free Sunday will be rescheduled on a date TBD

During Women’s History Month, you can explore Magnolia Mound through the experiences of the women who lived on the property. The 45-minute presentation will showcase the lives of women who played significant roles in the history of Magnolia Mound, from the early colonial period to those who led the preservation efforts to establish a historic house museum at Magnolia Mound.

Lafayette in America: The Nation’s Guest in Baton Rouge, 1825 - April 6 / 2 p.m.
The Marquis de Lafayette, a French soldier and American patriot, was a special guest of the United States from 1824 to 1825. Join us in commemorating the bicentennial of his visit to Louisiana and Baton Rouge by learning about Lafayette, his life, and his close connections to Magnolia Mound.

Preservation Month: 50th Anniversary of Magnolia Mound the Museum - May 4
In conjunction with National Preservation Month in May, Magnolia Mound is marking its 50th anniversary as a museum and education center. As Baton Rouge's oldest surviving frame structure, in 1975, the local community led restoration efforts to preserve the historical significance of the property and its educational value for the community. On May 4th, you can visit Magnolia Mound for a special highlighted tour and even enjoy a slice of birthday cake.
