Project background
The appearance of A19, the diabetes and endocrine centre, needs serious improvement and we need your help! We are frustrated that the look of our department doesn’t reflect our passion for caring for you. This needs to change and we want you to literally make your mark!
With support from the charities Diabetes UK and Art in the Heart, and commissioned artist, Natasha Clutterbuck, we are running free workshops for you, our patients, to come and create nature inspired murals, which will decorate the corridors and waiting room.
Inspired by the theme of “Precious Pollinators and the Wild River Making its Way to the Sea” we want to create a calm and welcoming environment to help guide people through their care.
Artist’s Proposal
Natasha’s aim is to create a mural that is inspired by the vibrant, natural habitat of the riverbank. Taking this idea, the narrative that will carry you from the entrance and along the corridor will be that of a journey along a river that flows out to sea. This idea will be illustrated by large scale riverside plants such as Alder, Willow, Hemp Agrimony, Water Mint, Purple Loose Strife, Water Plantain, painted along the walls of the corridor. These will be visited by pollinating insects found in this habitat, such as dragonflies, bees, hoverflies etc.
Pollinators are precious like the lives of the people who will use the Diabetes Unit including patients and staff. Insects such as honeybees, bumble bees, butterflies, hoverflies, damselflies, and dragonflies are vital to support a healthy ecology and symbolise a close connection with nature.
