“For some years, the want of a cemetery in Wombwell has been greatly felt. The only burial-place for the township is at Darfield. The parish now numbers over 5,000 and is rapidly increasing. The Board of Health have taken the matter up, and the want is about to be supplied.”

So, how do you build a cemetery? Join the Friends of Wombwell Cemetery for our annual FREE Heritage Open Days Weekend as we show you the step-by-step journey of how Wombwell Cemetery came to be via our pop-up exhibition in the Community Hub Chapel.

⛪ PLUS come and hold 157 years of history in your hands! You can see and feel stones and tiles from the chapels when they were built in 1867.

*We'll also be at the cemetery on Wednesday 17th for our usual volunteer day if you want to pop in, but the exhibition will not be set up on this date.
