An intimate evening of storytelling and songcraft, featuring three of Australia’s most compelling folk voices. Join Jo Davie, Hugh F, and one more special guest TBA for a warm afternoon of music sharing.
With a four-octave range and magnetic presence, Brisbane’s Jo Davie weaves jazz-tinged folk with lyrical grace and technical finesse. A finalist for Folk Alliance’s Young Artist of the Year, Jo’s performances are breathtakingly intimate, drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Laura Marling. Her recent debut EP Nothing Comes Free blends love, loss, and impermanence into lush acoustic storytelling that’s both delicate and powerful.
Hugh F writes honest folk songs with a crooked smile—about horses, regional buses, and the awkward grace of everyday life. From Dudhuroa Country and long based in Naarm, he’s toured nationally and abroad with Chastity Belt and Darren Hanlon. His lyrics are equal parts heart and humour, and his live shows feel like catching up with an old friend who’s brought their guitar and a few gentle revelations.
Like a seductive David Lynch chanteuse, Susie Scurry (aka The Grand Magoozi) occupies the stage in a dreamy twilight world. Scurry’s smoky vocals deliver lament and subtle wit in equal measure, pondering a modern world gone awry. Drawing on formative influences that take in Appalachian string-band music and the canon of Roy Orbison, Scurry calls from a time of burnished musical purity, imploring us to see through the haze and make simpler sense of today’s world.
