Maldives tuna: surviving as a small-scale fishery in a big ocean

The Maldives' two fisheries are a model of responsible harvest, evolving from centuries of traditional fishing. Now, in a changing world, the pole and line and handline fisheries need to adapt to remain viable in the long term. MSC certification of the pole and line component has been a driving force for positive change in the Maldives and now, the winds of change are guiding the industry through new challenges in a competitive market. Representatives from the Maldivian tuna industry will share challenges and opportunities from a real case study of a small-scale coastal fishery surviving in a world of big business and commercial fleets.
