Exploring Consciousness: From Science to Spirituality

What exactly is consciousness? Why do we have it? And how exploring it can help us better understand ourselves and the world around us? Join us at Growth Lab LIVE as we examine a few critical questions with Óscar Soto Angona, M.D, Psychiatrist at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Dèu, for a unique talk which explores some of these questions.

What is the one thing we can be absolutely certain of? That we are aware. Before we can doubt, question, or even think, we are conscious, and Descartes even proposed it to be the core feature of existence itself. This simple yet profound truth has puzzled philosophers, scientists, and mystics for centuries.

In this talk, we’ll dive into one of the deepest mysteries of human existence. Drawing from neuroscience, philosophy, Eastern spirituality, and psychedelic science, we’ll explore how different traditions and disciplines approach the question of consciousness. Along the way, we’ll reflect on how this understanding can shed light on the nature of suffering, and perhaps guide us toward a more connected and meaningful life.

Óscar Soto Angona, M.D., is a licensed psychiatrist based in Barcelona. After earning his medical degree from the University of Valladolid, he completed his psychiatry residency at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital, where he specialized in treatment-resistant depression and gained experience in transcultural psychiatry. His training also included internships in Australia and Berlin.

Óscar currently works at Parc Sanitari Sant Joan de Déu, where he divides his time between the Intensive Rehabilitation Psychiatric Unit and the ANIMA research group. His research focuses on the therapeutic potential of psychedelic substances and altered states of consciousness. He has worked as an investigator in multiple clinical trials in this field.

He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Psychiatry at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and a Master of Arts in Practical and Contemporary Philosophy at the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED). Óscar is also a certified psychedelic therapist and the founding president of the Spanish Society of Psychedelic Medicine (SEMPsi).His work lies at the intersection of neuroscience, philosophy, and spirituality, exploring how diverse epistemologies can contribute to a deeper understanding of consciousness and more effective ways to reduce human suffering.
