Maeyc Hewitt was a multi talented artist and musician who left this World on the 2nd of October 2015. I (Alan) first met him in 1971 when we both entered secondary school and we clicked instantly, spending the subsequent 44 years collaborating on various artistic projects, mostly music and films. We played together in groups like The Thin Yoghurts, The Ominous Dr Clip Clop, Reinheitsgebot, Third Spain, The Lungs and Ectogram. The final Ectogram gig took place as Maeyc died. It was up above the Arctic Circle in Norway. Maeyc knew he only had days left but was determined to play it and then go up to the Northern Cape to die. In the event he had deteriorated too much to make the journey but insisted on Ann and I playing the gig anyway, which we did, with two Norwrgian friends taking his place. Immediately before taking the stage we got the news from Wales that he had died.
Maeyc's only truly solo album was under the name "Nixon & Jarvis", named after a wonderful stationer's in Bangor that Maeyc and I used to frequent in our youth. The album, "Untilted", was released on the German indie label 'Pure Pop for Now People' in 2007, and we have acquired the last few vinyl pressings , which will be for sale at the gig. Nixon & Jarvis did play live a few times at the time, with Maeyc being joined by his wife Sue, Ian McMillan, myself, and other friends. This will be the first time that the album will be played live in its entirity, with Ian, who had played with Maeyc in many groups including Reinheitsgebot, Third Spain, UNUM and Facefish, taking on the vocal duties, backed by Dave Hopewell, Pete Walton, Humph and myself.
The project was initiated by the late Mark Thomas and so this is a tribute to both him and Maeyc, two of the greatest talents this area has ever known.
