The Ministry of Culture of Thailand and the Fine Arts Department proudly present Miscellany of Khon — a documentary that explores the traditional Thai masked dance Khon through a contemporary lens, screened at Alliance Francaise Bangkok on June 4, 2025. .
Led by Thanpuying Sirikitiya Jensen and directed by internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Jitti Chompee, the film invites audiences into the unexpected world of Khon, as seen through the eyes of a new generation, which embraces contemporary art while honoring the deep-rooted spirit of tradition.
Structured in six thematic episodes — Thread, The Last Chui Chai, Femininity in Male Performers, Narration, Untold Stories, and Baak — the film does not depict Khon directly. Instead, it draws inspiration from its narrative structure and movement techniques, uncovered through extensive research.
By simplifying traditional ornamentation, the documentary emphasizes emotional resonance over decorative beauty. As the film unfolds, it reveals how art can foster autonomy and reflect the complexity of human emotion — contributing not only to aesthetics but to the cultivation of humanity itself.
By capturing essential nuances from the traditional art form and by reducing traditional decorations, the film reveals how the work of art contributes to meaning rather than beauty and how it enhances one's freedom of autonomy.
