Uttari Betta: The Hidden Fortress Hill of Karnataka
Uttari Betta, also known as Hutridurga, is a scenic and historically significant hill fort located about 75 km from Bangalore, near Kunigal in Tumkur district. Standing tall at around 3,700 feet, this trek is often called the "Western Ghats of Bangalore" for its lush greenery and misty charm.
The trail winds through seven stone doorways that once served as defense gateways for the ancient fort, believed to be built by Kempegowda, the founder of Bangalore. As you ascend, you pass through dense patches of shrub forest, rocky paths, and grasslands, with boulder-strewn outcrops providing a striking contrast to the vibrant green meadows.
The route is dotted with natural caves, stone archways, and remnants of ancient structures, eventually leading to the serene Shankareswara Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva at the summit. From the top, you're rewarded with panoramic views of rolling hills, scattered villages, and farmland, making it a photographer’s delight—especially during sunrise or after the monsoon when everything is wrapped in a green blanket.
Uttari Betta lies close to the Savandurga State Forest region, and its surroundings are rich in birdlife, butterflies, and seasonal wildflowers. It offers a peaceful yet energizing experience for nature lovers, first-time trekkers, and anyone seeking a quick one-day getaway into the hills from Bangalore.
