Certificate Course: Introduction to Natural Fibres and Dyes

A Journey through Sustainable Textile Practices


Organised by the Centres of Excellence at Srishti Manipal Institute of Art Design and Technology in partnership with Avani a community-based organisation based in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand.


​This six-day immersive Certificate Course invites design students and young professionals to rediscover the wisdom of natural fibres and dyes. Rooted in sustainability and traditional knowledge systems this journey offers hands-on learning in fibre processing and natural dyeing all while nurturing a deep connection to ecological and cultural narratives.


​What You'll Experience

  • ​Insights into circular production systems supported by by indigenous practices.
  • ​Techniques in cleaning carding spinning and dyeing fibres through direct engagement.
  • ​Exploration of material ecosystems and the farm-to-fabric journey of Harsil wool and Brown cotton.
  • ​A tour of a living dye garden with opportunities to craft your own colour palettes using natural dyes.
  • ​Collaborative design sessions focused on building sustainable textile solutions


​Course Plan: A Day-by-Day Journey


​Day 1. Local Material Ecosystems & Spinning

  • ​Orientation & Expectations: Set the tone for the week with shared intentions and course goals.
  • ​ Introduction to Material Ecosystems: Discover how natural materials are cultivated and their relationship with local ecological systems.
  • ​Spinning Session: Experience the tactile magic of hand-spinning cotton on the peti charkha working with a native cotton variety.


​Day 2. The Farm-to-Fabric Journey of Harsil Wool

  • ​Ecological Footprint of Wool: Trace the origin and regenerative properties of Harsil wool a fibre steeped in tradition.
  • ​Sustainability in Practice: Learn how traditional communities engage in sustainable wool production.
  • ​Hands-On Immersion: Participate in the fibre-to-yarn process—cleaning carding and spinning wool using hand techniques passed down through generations.


​Day 3.  Soil to Fabric - The Revival of Brown Cotton

  • ​Material Story of Brown Cotton: Delve into the narrative of this indigenous fibre—its agricultural history and textile journey.
  • ​Listening to the Land: Engage with the wisdom of soil expert Soil Vasu who will speak about the vital links between soil health and human wellbeing.


​Day 4. Natural Dyeing Experience

  • ​Foundations of Natural Dyeing: Learn the environmental and health benefits of dyeing with nature’s palette.
  • ​From Leaf to Hue: Exploring CoE’s Natural Dye Garden the living sources of plant-based colour.
  • ​Hands-On Dyeing Workshop: Craft your own natural dye colour palettes through experiential learning.
  • ​Comparative Discussion: Explore the contrasts between natural and synthetic dyeing—environmental impact toxicity and aesthetic difference.


​Day 5. Designing Circular Textile Systems

  • ​Synthesis & Reflection: Weave together insights from previous days in an open reflection circle.
  • ​Collaborative Design Exercise: Co-create textile-based solutions rooted in traditional techniques but aimed at contemporary sustainability challenges.
  • ​Presentation of Projects: Share outcomes and processes with peers and facilitators celebrating diverse perspectives and creative expression.


​Day 6. Final Reflections & Certification

  • ​Closing Circle: Engage in a collective reflection on personal transformation learnings and future intentions. 
  • ​Award Ceremony: Participants will receive a Certificate of Completion issued by Srishti Manipal Institute of Art Design and Technology.

​Tuition Fee: ₹8500 per participant
