Join us at BMA Lexington Market for a one-of-a-kind journey into the world of ancient sound technologies with artist Melissa Foss.
In this immersive performance and instrument demonstration, you’ll experience the magic of polyphonic flutes, whistling bottles, and resonant clay horns—just as they were played by cultures long ago. We’ll explore the rich traditions of these instruments, listen to their beautiful tones, and even try our hand at playing hand-built clay flutes.
This program is open to English and Spanish speakers. Participants of all ages are welcome!
Registration is encouraged, but not required. Reserve your free ticket at artb.ma/4kAdCPj.
Location: The Baltimore Room at BMA Lexington Market
The Baltimore Room at Lexington Market is located in the Upper Market at 112 N. Eutaw Street.
About the Artist
Melissa Hyatt Foss is an instrument-maker, musician, composer-performer, and teaching artist who co-creates with an ever-growing collection of instruments, including polyphonic flutes, horns, noise generators, bells, rattles, and whistling bottles, that she hand-crafts with clay. Her instruments—both visual and sonic, sculptural and functional—reimagine Pre-Columbian sound technologies of the Americas through the lens of personal narrative and regional mythology.
