Become confident. Climb independently. Set up safely.
Our two-day top rope rigging course is ideal for climbers who want to gain the skills and confidence to safely set up their own climbs outdoors. Whether you’re preparing to take responsibility for your own days out or aiming to climb more independently with a partner, this course offers a practical, hands-on introduction to rigging systems and safe set-ups.
Led by experienced instructors in the Peak District’s renowned gritstone landscape, you’ll learn how to build solid anchors, use your gear effectively, and develop an understanding of risk management and safety at the crag. With low ratios and lots of time to practise, this course is all about helping you build safe habits from the start.
What to Expect
We’ll head to a suitable gritstone crag – typically Stanage Edge, Burbage, or another nearby venue depending on the weather and group needs.
Day one focuses on understanding and using climbing equipment, anchor selection, knot work, and building top rope systems using natural protection. We’ll also look at crag edge safety, how to protect yourself while rigging, and methods to check your systems.
Day two gives you more time to practise – under supervision – building a range of safe and efficient set-ups. We’ll also cover good crag etiquette and troubleshooting common problems. Expect supportive coaching throughout, with plenty of time for questions and feedback.
Please note: this is not a learn-to-lead course – the focus is on bottom/top rope systems, not lead climbing.
