We are pleased to invite you to join Retina UK's Mark Baxter and the group for our latest in-person Buckinghamshire local peer support group meet up where we will be visiting the Discover Bucks Museum in Aylesbury for an exclusive audio described touch tour.
You will have the chance to handle and explore a fascinating variety of objects from the museum’s collection. The session is designed as a free-flow workshop, where you can move between tables at your own pace and focus on the items that spark your interest.
During your visit, you’ll have the opportunity to handle fossils and compare them to our modern-day equivalents with their Keeper of Natural History & Geology, Mike Palmer. He’ll also have backbones from prehistoric marine reptiles and bones from Ice Age mammals, giving a sense of just how large and powerful these ancient creatures once were. You may choose to visit their Keeper of Archaeology, Brett Thorn, where he will be showing Neolithic axe heads, used by early humans, or Roman pottery that once served everyday purposes nearly two thousand years ago. You can also explore mystery objects from social history and traditional crafts with Nina Glencross, Keeper of Social History. These objects highlight the skills and trades that shaped Buckinghamshire’s past.
Overall, the session you will have will give you a good understanding of the variety of the museum's collection, which spans millions of years and reflects the many different stories of Buckinghamshire’s past.
The museum is also running a ‘Beyond the Stars: a propmaker’s guide to the galaxy’ exhibition which showcases original models and props used in the making of the most iconic science fiction shows to appear on British TV, including Doctor Who, Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
Visitors can journey through the realms of time and space and get up-close to the props and models that helped bring these beloved series to life. All the exhibits on display are screen-used and some have never been on public display before.
Don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to experience some amazing artefacts specially arranged by the museum curators in a private room for us where tea and coffee will also be included.
This event is kindly funded by the National Lottery Community Fund so will be free of charge to our community living with inherited sight loss and their sighted companion or guide.
