Join Avondale Estates city staff at Fletcher Park (2 Lakeshore Plaza) on October 30 at 10 a.m. for a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of the park's upgrades made possible by a State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds (SLFRF) Improving Neighborhood Outcomes in Disproportionately Impacted Communities grant totaling $393,057 from the state of Georgia's Office of Planning and Budget.
After much input from the community, the City oversaw the transformation, which included:
- Small upgrades to the existing wooden playground equipment, including removing old beams, replacing the old slide, and sanding and staining the wood to increase its lifespan.
- Adding multi-generation playground equipment to provide adult fitness options.
- Removing invasive plants along the northeast property line, maintaining the established trees and hollies, and replanting the bank with native plants to prevent erosion.
- Adding a culvert and rock near the Lakeshore Plaza entrance to direct water into a shallow rain garden.
- Cleaning out the existing rock swale leading to Cobbs Creek and increasing its size and width.
- Incorporating an ADA-compliant slate trail and concrete ramp leading to the mulch playground area.
- Installing a pollinator garden around the Swift Tower to improve aesthetics and increase pollinators in the park in conjunction with the City's Bee City USA certification.
- Installing oak leaf bike racks at the Lakeshore Plaza entrance as a nod to the large Oak tree at the site entrance.
- Creating four additional smaller pollinator beds at the Lakeshore Plaza entrance.
- Replacing all picnic tables and benches with metal furniture and placing them on pads or mulch instead of grass.
- Adding unground drainage under the playground to assist with soggy ground conditions.
