ZENWAYS MOUNTAIN WALKING RETREAT 2025

Join us for this unique exploring the ancient path of Shugendo, combining traditional Zen practices with mountain walking in the spectacular Scottish Highlands. We will spend most of each day hiking into high mountain areas (weather permitting) with a shorter low-level walk on the last day. No previous experience of hillwalking or retreats is required but a reasonable level of fitness is essential.

DETAILS

Arrival time is at 6pm on the Friday evening for supper at 6.30pm where we will discuss the weekend’s plans. Our days will begin and end with meditation led by Zen Master Daizan Roshi. After breakfast and making up our packed lunches, most of our time will be devoted to walking in the mountains together as a group.

We will use this as the focus for our Zen practice, with extended periods of silent reflection and some simple rituals led by Daizan incorporated into each journey into the mountain environment.

Walks are led by Junior Zen Teacher and qualified Mountain Leader Penny Clay who will hold the final decision for route choice on the day, dependent on weather conditions. Walks may last for up to eight hours. All walks will be on established paths but they can be rocky and rough with steep drops.
