THE COVENANT fue formada por Nagash y Blackheart en 1993 como proyecto paralelo de Troll. Originalmente llamada Covenant, la banda cambió a THE KOVENANT en 1999. El primer disco, “In Times Before The Light”, fue lanzado en 1997. El primer éxito llegó con “Nexus Polaris” en 1998, y la banda ahora incluía nuevos miembros con Hellhammer (Mayhem, Arcturus), Astennu (ex-Dimmu Borgir), Sverd (Arcturus) y Sarah Jezebel Deva (ex-Cradle Of Filth). “Nexus Polaris” fue aclamado como un clásico instantáneo cuando se volcó al black metal sinfónico, y sigue siendo un hito de esa era. El disco ganó un Grammy Noruego como mejor disco de metal.
