Taino Harvest Gathering 2025
Casabe Workshop & Ceremony
with Yukayeke Yara Cu
Free & Open to the Public!
October 12, 2025 (2-5pm)
BRING YOUR MARACA & BEACH CHAIR!
Learn how to make Casabe bread - Taino style, in ceremony - with Yukayeke Yara Cu.
The Yuca Harvest was sacred for our Taino Ancestors. Yuca was our food staple. When grated and properly prepared into Casabe (traditional flatbread), it could feed a Yukayeke through post-hurricane times when there was little food -- as Casabe would keep without molding for a year.
In the tradition of our Ancestors, our gathering will open in ceremony led by our Kacike Tekina-eirú, and feature an afternoon of Casabe making and joyful Areyto -- ceremonial dance for all!
We will make Casabe to remember our Ancestors and...
Remind ourselves -- after the torrential rains of Spring and incinerating Summer heat -- the Fall harvest is up ahead!
Our Taino Harvest Gathering will take place under the pecan trees of our Batey at the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery Street, Austin TX 78702.
