(Image- part of the original poster for the 1937 event, the word "Kunst," meaning art, is in scare quotes…)
For no particular reason whatsoever, the theme for the 2025 Autumn Art Show @Lloyd will be *Degenerate Art.*
Let’s lean into our Most Modern, weirdest, surrealist, and spectacularly strange. Make some art that leaves your mama wondering, “Who’s your DADA.” Out with the oldeau and in with the nouveau. Deco the halls and Bauhaus the Bassment. Make a lasting impression and express thyselves!

*A Little Random History…
Die Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst" (The Degenerate Art Exhibition) opened July 19th 1937, created as a counterpoint to what was meant to be the Main Show: The Great German Art Exhibition, which ran concurrently. The exhibit was ordered into existence by Hitler himself to showcase 650 pieces of modern art that had been confiscated from around the country in order to demonstrate how inferior this art and these artists were.
What did they mean “degenerate art?” It was an umbrella term meant to define the “other.” Anything the Nazis deemed would "insult German feeling, or destroy or confuse natural form or simply reveal an absence of adequate manual and artistic skill." “...showing qualities such as "decadence", "weakness of character", "mental disease", and "racial impurity." Etc.” What was the point of these exhibitions? To scapegoat the avant-garde and exalt classical and neoclassical art.
Fun fact- twice as many people went to see The Degenerate Art Exhibition than her counterpart. In fact, it is rumored to have been the most popular art show in European exhibition history, averaging around 20,000 visitors a day during its 2 month run.
