Since 2010 this has been a tradition to host an annual 9/11 memorial climb and fundraiser.
Every year we select a nonprofit to raise funds and awareness for and this year we've chosen MVP (My Veteran Passion)!
MVP's mission is to spearhead veteran suicide prevention using physical activity and exercise as its vehicle. The founder, Doc Soto, served with alongside one of our owner's (Mike) brother and is now part of our family too. Please help us, help him carry out his life's mission. DETAILS OF THE EVENT ARE AS FOLLOWS:
There were 110 stories in each Twin Tower, 220 combined. Although there is no set number that we can find, the average number of individual stairs within a flight of stairs (a story) seems to be 20. Mt. Bonnell has 99 stairs that lead to the top of the highest point in all of Austin, which also happens to look over one of Austin's most beautiful scenic views. Those 99 individual stairs equals to 4.95 stories per climb, we'll call it an even 5.
In order to reach the equivalent of running up BOTH Twin Towers- 220 stories- to pay ultimate homage, one would need to climb Mt Bonnell 44 times. That, ladies and gentlemen, is what we have done for the past 10ish years and will do so again this year.
We'll meet atop Mt. Bonnell *BEFORE* 7AM on Thursday, September 11th, and start sharply at 7am. There will be an "intermission/halftime" as we hold a moment of silence at 7:46am (the time the first tower was struck) to pay tribute to all the innocent lives we lost on that tragic day, as well as for every life that's been taken since then as a result of those attacks. We will never forget.
Mount Bonnell Park is a non-reservable park so, like every year until we can convince the city otherwise, this is an "unofficial-official event". With that being said, please do not feel discouraged if you can't make our start time, you have all day to knock it out on your own! We created this event with the idea and hopes to get everybody out and moving, on 9/11 to honor the fallen. There is nothing like climbing those stairs in the Texas heat with old and new friends, together, united. We look forward to honoring the fallen by pushing ourselves, with you by our side.
