Encaustic Painting for Beginners

Fees: All materials and tools are provided by the instructor and are included in the cost of the workshop. Particpants will leave with with 1-2 piece of their own artwork!

Location: This workshop will be held in the main space of Micak Gallery. We are in the heart of Aurora located in St. Andrew’s Village Plaza at Yonge St. & Orchard Heights Blvd near Centra Grocery. Look for the neon pink ART sign.

About the Instructor: Iraqi - Canadian artist Dania Al-Obaidi's encaustic works blend ancient techniques with dynamic, modern compositions. Trained in Fine Arts at Baghdad University and furthering her education in Canada, Al-Obaidi has exhibited extensively across Iraq, Canada, and the United States.

Al-Obaidi's abstract encaustic paintings are deeply influenced by the interplay of memory and emotion. Describing the process of layering wax as like the way memories are built and preserved within the mind, each layer of colour adds depth and meaning.

Encaustic, or “hot wax” painting, is an ancient art form involving mixing heated beeswax with coloured pigments. The wax is then applied in layers onto a surface using tools such as brushes, palette knives, or often in Al-Obaidi's case, her hands.

These visually striking compositions are rich with expressive colours and textures and tell vibrant stories with filled with symbolism and emotive imagery. Works you can feel.
