The Augusta Museum of History welcomes you to come in and meet Chef Kevin Mitchell and Culinary Historian David S. Shields, hear about their culinary journey though the state of Georgia and taste a little of what makes southern cuisine so distinctive. This free event is open to all on Saturday, August 23rd at 1:00pm in the Museum Rotunda.

Following the critical and popular success of Taste the State South Carolina, the University of South Carolina Press is proud to announce the August 2025 release of its much-anticipated follow-up, Taste the State: Georgia - Distinctive Foods and Stories from Where Eating Local Began by chef Kevin Mitchell and culinary historian David S. Shields.

From Brunswick stew to Vidalia onions, and fried apple pies to the storied Georgia Products Feasts of 1913, Taste the State: Georgia is a sweeping, flavorful exploration of the state’s distinctive culinary traditions and the stories behind them. In this richly illustrated and deeply researched volume, Chef Mitchell and Shields highlight more than sixty iconic ingredients and dishes that define the diverse and enduring food culture of the Peach State.
