Over the weekend, my elder son Ryan and I watched McFarland, USA — a true story of a coach who saw strength in a group of unlikely champions and helped them become state cross-country champions.
What stood out wasn’t who came in first, but the runner who came in last — Danny Díaz, the quiet anchor who pushed through when it mattered most. He was never the fastest — but when it mattered most, he gave everything he had. That last push changed everything. Without him, there would’ve been no victory.
It reminded me of Toastmasters.
Here, it’s not just the speakers in the spotlight who matter — it’s the timers, the evaluators, the first-timers who show up nervously, and those who give feedback with care. Every role, every voice counts. Everyone matters.
Just like Danny, you don’t have to lead from the front to make a difference — just keep showing up, growing stronger, and supporting your team by doing our own part.
