Sculptural instruments and musical assemblages made from single use PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic bottles. To make these works, plastic bottles of all shapes and sizes were scavenged from roadsides, liberated from recycling bins and recovered from waterways, then put to use as sound makers, resonators and musical activators. The result is a plastic orchestra of melancholic sounds: pump bottle flutes, milk bottle reeds, fizzy drink percussion, strings cut from ‘mineral water’ bottles in slow, patient spirals and played with plastic bottle bows.
PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is a type of plastic most commonly encountered in the form of plastic bottles for soft drinks and water. Last year, the world produced around 800 billion plastic water bottles. Every minute, some million plastic bottles are purchased worldwide. About 80% of these bottles end up in landfills. Only 9% are recycled. And annually more than 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean.
Poetically, seeing as much of our plastic waste eventually makes its way to rivers and oceans, many of these instruments and assemblages use water in conjunction with the bottles, as an activator, tensioner and tuner.
This is a hands-on exhibition – the audience is invited to fully explore the works. At the closing of the exhibition, Daniel Beban will present a new composition for plastic ensemble.
Exhibition opens: Thursday 5 June, 5.30pm, with refreshments by Liberty Breweries
Hours: 12 – 4pm, Tuesday – Saturday
