Calla of Ursa is touring Aotearoa with 5 shows to celebrate the release of her new album, ‘Animal Reaction’, before she departs our shores to spend the next few years in Europe and the UK.
Accompanied by cellist Olivia Wilding, the Animal Reaction tour is set to compound upon Calla of Ursa’s reputation for bringing even time itself to a standstill during her live performances. The Tāmaki Makaurau show on May 22nd will allow attendees to be the first in the world to hear the full album before its release at the end of the month.
Calla of Ursa is an operatic soprano, violinist, and electronic producer who offers a listening experience designed to stir the depths of our primal inner worlds. A master of the human-voice-as-instrument, Calla is one of those people for whom music is not a pond lightly dabbled in, but an ocean that she calls home. It’s not so much that she plays music; it simply pours out of her.
In “Animal Reaction”, Calla of Ursa gives voice to the Mother, not just of humans but of the earth itself. A call of resistance and reclamation, the visceral soundscapes of the album speaks to the shared experience of oppression through the subjugation of women, animals, and the environment. Wrought from the very essence of feminine power, wisdom, and rage, the album channels the fury of Mother Earth herself into a fierce call for justice through cinematic swells, gentle folk piano riffs, and heavy hitting tribal pop beats.
This is going to be your last chance to see Calla of Ursa for a long while and you really don’t want to miss this one.
Local support from Ersha Island (Tāmaki Makaurau).
