"Laying the Ghost", by Simon Williams, is a fast moving and touching comedy about love and infidelity, set in a home for retired actors.
Characters
Margot Buchanan – a retired actress and a resident of the home, maybe aged 60-70. Elegant and self- confident, formerly married to Leo. On stage for almost the whole play.
Freda Deacon – a retired actress and the oldest resident, upwards of 70. Eccentric and rather unkempt and able to see ghosts. A good friend to Margot, and very antipathetic to Leo. On stage for about three-quarters of the play.
Sir Leo Buchanan – a well-preserved older actor, still working, maybe aged 55-70. Very elegant, self-confident and well spoken; rather a womaniser. Visiting Margot for her birthday. On stage for about three-quarters of the play.
Mrs Kidd – administrator of the home. Professional and quietly competent. Any age approx 30 to 70. On stage for about one-quarter of the play.
Lady Judy Buchanan – a very attractive and well-dressed woman, maybe 35-55. Leo’s current wife. On stage for about one-quarter of the play.
Sadie Croft – a young, pretty and competent actress, maybe 20-30, visiting Margot for advice on playing Juliet. On stage for about two-thirds of the play.
As written the show is set in the UK, around the year 2000, however we may adjust that. Ethnicity is irrelevant and accents are not critical, though the characters who are actors do need good enunciation.
There is no significant disrobing or intimacy, though Leo and Margot might kiss.
Commitment
It’s proposed to hold rehearsals on three evenings a week from 13 July (Sunday, Monday, Thursday). A draft schedule will be available and anyone auditioning MUST disclose any unavailability.
Auditions
No specified passages need be prepared but candidates are encouraged to look at the script and to come prepared to read and to act in character. If required individual call-backs will follow over the next few days.
