About the event

Tākaro with the Oi Sisters: Wāhine Perspectives from the Pā to the Papa Tākaro
Join the Oi sisters for a kōrero that’s real, raw, and full of heart, where they unpack the many roles wāhine carry as māmā, aunties, daughters, and community changemakers, all through the lens of tākaro. They’ll dive into the many layers of play — play that grounds us, connects us, and empowers us across every space we move through.

Together they will explore the role of wāhine as enablers of play, while keeping it real about the sacrifices, challenges, and mahi that often come with holding that space. Expect honest reflections, a few laughs, and some big whakaaro on how wāhine are showing up, stepping up, and shaking up the world of play and leadership.

Hosting this kōrero is fellow Oi sister, Dr Nikki Penetito-Hemara, who will also lead a deep dive with the sisters into two powerful tākaro reports, Hihiri te Ngākau - Tākaro Insights from Te Taitokerau and Ko te Mana o te Wahine - An Exploration of Manawahine & Tākaro.

Together, we’ll explore what tākaro looks like in our own lives through the lens of Taiao, Tangata, and Mātauranga.

From dusty backroads to kaupapa-driven spaces, they harness design thinking, cultural innovation, and community development to disrupt the status quo to uplift mātauranga Māori; to activate change by tackling inequity head-on; and to grow spaces of self-expression, empowerment and joy.
