Fair warning: there is not enough room in this bio to include all of Liam Purcell’s accomplishments and accolades. But here are a few highlights: No Depression characterizes Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road as “the future of bluegrass.” By the time Purcell was 17, the project had seen multiple entries on the Billboard Top 10 Bluegrass charts, performed in 25 states, and was recognized by the International Bluegrass Music Association as the Momentum Band of the Year. When Liam was accepted by Berklee College of Music, it could have been the end of the group. Instead, despite the rigorous course of study, Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road performed over 80 dates per year around an academic schedule, and Liam managed to write and record an album, which led to a recording contract with Pinecastle Records.
In 2022, Purcell shook the bluegrass world by sweeping the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships in Colorado, taking home first place honors on mandolin, banjo, and guitar. He is the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships.
2024 saw the group tour more than ever. That was no surprise, since Liam didn’t graduate from Berklee until May 2024. Did we forget to mention that he is only 22 years old? Yes, the future of bluegrass, the leader of a stringband supergroup, the IBMA’s Momentum Band of the Year, the only person to ever achieve a simultaneous victory in multiple championships at the Rockygrass Instrumental Championships… is just 22 years old.
Liam Purcell & Cane Mill Road will be making great music for many more years to come. But come see them perform now; you’ll be glad you did!
