In Conversation with Ezekiel Stear

Join us on Friday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m. for an evening with Ezekiel Stear, as he discusses his groundbreaking new book, Nahua Horizons: Persuasion and Futurities in Colonial Mexico (University of Arizona Press).

Stear’s work challenges the dominant narrative that Spanish colonization erased Indigenous culture. Instead, he reveals how Indigenous writers in colonial Spanish America actively shaped their world—politically, economically, and spiritually—through powerful acts of resistance and creativity.

A respected scholar, Stear has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to volumes from Vanderbilt University Press and Routledge. He’s presented at major conferences, including LASA, the Association of Nahuatl Scholars, and the Newberry Library. Currently, he serves as Assistant Professor of Colonial Spanish American Literature at Auburn University and directs the Auburn Summer Abroad in Lima, Peru Program.

Stear will be in conversation with Dr. Hayley Woodward of Auburn University’s Art History Department.
