Trees Atlanta's TreeKeeper program trains volunteers to become leaders in caring for the urban forest. By the end of the program, volunteers can also become a Certified TreeKeeper after completing project leadership requirements. The TreeKeeper program consists of practical tree education over the course of 7 consecutive Saturday sessions; optional 24-hour volunteer service requirement can be completed to earn Certified TreeKeeper status.
Training is for ALL levels and explores (topics/topic date subject to change):
7/12 - Intro to TreeKeepers and Trees Atlanta
7/19 - Ecology of Place
7/26 - Tree Identification
8/2 - Tree Selection
8/9 - Tree Health (soil, mature tree care, common tree pests)
8/16 - Atlanta's Canopy/Heat Island Effect
8/23 - Invasive Species
Students will receive 7 classes, a field guide to trees in the Eastern United States, and a discount at the Annual Trees Atlanta Tree Sale. The program includes indoor and outdoor activities, science-based content, engaging hands-on demonstrations, and interaction with classmates and instructors.
Students are strongly encouraged to earn their Certified TreeKeeper status by completing 24 hours of volunteer service in a leadership role. Leadership hours can be completed with Trees Atlanta or with another organization that is related to urban forestry. Certified TreeKeepers are eligible to lead others in volunteer projects. Certified TreeKeepers are important contributors in our mission to protect and improve the urban forest, either by volunteering with Trees Atlanta's existing programs or by creating their own projects beyond Trees Atlanta's reach.
