2025. If you've been around long enough, it feels like a Jetsons year. Already 10 years past when Michael J. Fox jumped forward into the future. Where is my hoverboard?
In personal storytelling, though, we have the ability to time travel in all sorts of ways. Storytelling guru, Mike Birbiglia, has this famous trope where he addresses audiences by forecasting he might be about to make a bad decision during one his stories: "I know. I'm in the future too."
So, tell us about a time, if you could go back and make another choice or two, things might have turned out differently? Hit us with your sliding doors, lost loves, and the missed opportunities you've always wondered about.
Alternatively, what are your stories that really only work because of how technology and life were different back then? Did you and your best friend get lost because there was no GPS? Were you stuck in Hungary with only a payphone and no calling card? Did you lose out on a veritable fortune because your mom threw out your baseball cards, Beanie Babies, or comic book collection?
We'll be sitting quite squarely in the present with you at Manuel’s Tavern on Tuesday, May 13 at 7p, as we always do on second Tuesdays of the month. Come down early to order up some grub, and fellowship with other story connoisseurs.
STORYTELLING TIPS:
Find the change in your story. In her show stopper, “Defying Gravity,” Elphaba sings, “something has changed in me.” A story is not a story unless some change has occurred. What's changed in you as the narrator, the circumstances, or the environment? If nothing changes, then it might just be an anecdote. Find the change in your story. As such, every story you tell brings change into the world.
FREE STORY COACHING:
We tend to be at Manuel’s by 6p on the night of the show. If you’d like a little coaching as you prepare to get up on that mic, please feel free to arrive in the hour before to talk through your story’s points for some potential ideas or help with shaping it.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:
We always need volunteers to make our events run like clockwork. Roles include:
*greet people at the door & encourage sign-ups
*keep up the tradition with timing stories
*be our personal paparazzi! (take photos)
Please write back to us here if you’d like to volunteer!
