The History of Jerry Day ATL:
After Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, The Dunhams (Jeff and Maria) found a way to bring together the Atlanta DeadHead community in a way never seen before. When they retired to Florida well over 10 years ago, the scene experienced a void.
Ten years after the Grateful Dead ceased touring, Jerry Day ATL organizers Lewis Newmark (GR8FLDUDE) and Jim Roe had been lamenting about the lack of a cohesive Grateful Dead experience in N.Georgia and decided to do something about it. In 2008, they put together the first Jerry Day ATL event the help of Shorty’s Pizza, and staged the first two annual events in Tucker, GA followed by a highly successful third yearly gathering at The Five Spot in Little 5 Points (since renamed as Aisle 5).
After several years of presenting Garcia-inspired dinners, Chef Ron Eyester, proprietor of Rosebud, The Family Dog, Timone’s and Diner, decided to get on the bus in 2011 by sponsoring the event and providing The Family Dog as the venue, and has allowed this seminal event to reach higher levels of extravaganza in 2012 with 12 bands for under $30 - a price unheard of since the 1970’s.... must be a flashback! The following year, Ron’s involvement with Jerry Day ATL along with opening a restaurant at Atlantic Station allowed the event to grow into a grand outdoor setting with larger staging & sound systems.
In 2014, Thomas Helland (better known as TDAWG) joined forces with our team and made it possible for Terminal West to become our permanent home. In 2020, our 13th annual Jerry Day ATL survived COVID-19 and was saved by moving to Music On Main Street (MOMS) due to all indoor venues being temporarily closed. Jerry Day ATL returned to Terminal West in 2021 and continues for the eleventh show at this storied venue in 2025.
