About the event

Alston Lecture: The Art of Gardening at Chanticleer
Join Chanticleer Garden’s Executive Director and Head Gardener Bill Thomas for a visual tour and behind-the-scenes look at what The Washington Post calls “one of the most interesting and edgy public gardens in America.” Chanticleer is known for environmentally sensitive, residential-scale designs featuring foliage and flowers, a wide variety of containers, and imaginative homemade furniture. The former Rosengarten estate in suburban Philadelphia aims to be visually exciting, educational, fun, and an attractive demonstration garden using ecological principles. Bill will offer insights into what inspires this special place, including results from its multi-year biodiversity study.

Bill holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Ornamental Horticulture from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Bill arrived at the 50-acre pleasure garden Chanticleer on April Fools’ Day, 2003. Previously, he was at Longwood Gardens for 26 years, the last five in Research and Production and the prior 21 in Education. Bill leads the talented and creative Chanticleer staff in its continued development of the young garden, now in its 32nd year. He emphasizes an environmentally sensitive and multi-century approach to the property. Along with the Chanticleer staff, he co-authored The Art of Gardening (Timber Press), recipient of the American Horticultural Society (AHS) Book Award. He received the Scott Medal and Award in 2017 and the AHS Professional Award in 2016.

Hosted in partnership with Trees Atlanta.

The Philip and Elkin Alston Lecture Series is made possible by generous support from the estate of Elkin Goddard Alston.

Free and open to the public in Day Hall. No registration is required. This program will be live streamed on the Garden’s Facebook. If you have any questions or concerns about this program, please contact Y2xhc3NlcyB8IGF0bGFudGFiZyAhIG9yZw==.
