PRETORIA MINING DISASTER - GUIDED TOUR OF RUINS

This event is well worth the effort if you can get there. The location is just a mile away from Jcts 4 and 5 of the M61, alternatively it is 500 metres from Atherton railway station

A Guided Tour of the Ruins of Hulton Colliery, scene of the Pretoria Mining Disaster December 21st 1910.
Meet 10am Pretoria Memorial, Broadway off Newbrook Road.
Adults £4, under 14s £3.

Renowned mining historian Alan Davies gives a detailed account, build-up, cause, event and aftermath, of an underground explosion on December 21st 1910 which took the lives of 344 local men and boys. We visit the site of the Hulton Colliery where the ruins are still visible. Mr Davies shows a short black and white newsreel which was shown in cinemas at the time, plays a recorded interview with a miner who was underground when it happened and gives a demonstration of water divining (see photo). Also in attendance on this event is local folk singer/songwriter CORRIE SHELLEY. Hear her sing her Pretoria song, "Johnny" on the very site where it happened.
