“Common Ground”

Taking inspiration from the big black table found in this studio apartment in Votanikos, a new collective artist-run space
with studios and shared working spaces was born, named Big Table. This piece of connection with the previous inhabitants, inspired Big Table to invite creatives and artists through an open call to contribute to this history-making process, by sharing the same “Common Ground”.
To shape this exhibition, Big Table invited two independent curators and creatives, Simone Niarou and Christina Petkopoulou, to form an independent selection jury and curate their public program. For the first two weeks of October, Big Table will host a group exhibition and a public program full of activities, performances, workshops and lectures.
The exhibition takes its cue from the theories of the Commons,
reimagining an unrestricted and shared flow of objects, people, and knowledge in an environment that keeps on transforming. Struggling in a time when we are forced into productivity, lacking imagination and blocked from freedom of movement, Common practices underpin a new kind of orientation, flexibility, and freedom in bodily experience of space, time, and objects. Εchoing the insights of Sara Ahmed, by claiming intimacy and familiarity within strangeness, we open ourselves to the possibility of new impressions, new ways of exploring what once appeared static and rigid. The table is no longer merely for dining, writing, or resting.
The participating artists took this step further by daring to look under the table, exploring the fragility and softness of a once stable and solid object, tracing its origin and the one of those once gathered around it. The table translates Common practices into opportunities to untangle the urban ecosystem, inviting us to grow as a communal organism and dynamic social structure that produces new meanings and directions amid disorientation.
The table is big and it is good. It fits everyone.

Σε ένα διαμέρισμα στην περιοχή του Βοτανικού, στο οποίο βρέθηκε ένα μεγάλο, μαύρο τραπέζι γεννήθηκε ένα νέο
artist-run space, το Big Table, ένας χώρος όπου πλέον συνυπάρχουν καλλιτεχνικά εργαστήρια και εκθεσιακός χώρος. Το κοινό τραπέζι ενέπνευσε την ομάδα να προσκαλέσει καλλιτεχνά μέσα από ένα διεθνές ανοιχτό κάλεσμα, για να συμβάλλουν σε αυτή τη διαδικασία δημιουργίας ιστορίας, μοιραζόμενα το ίδιο τραπέζι, το ίδιο “Common Ground” (Κοινό Έδαφος).
Για τη διαμόρφωση αυτής της έκθεσης, το Big Table προσκάλεσε τις ανεξάρτητες επιμελήτριες Σιμώνη Νιάρου και
Χριστίνα Πετκοπούλου να συγκροτήσουν την επιτροπή επιλογής καλλιτεχνών και να επιμεληθούν το δημόσιο
πρόγραμμα. Για τις δύο πρώτες εβδομάδες του Οκτωβρίου, το Big Table θα φιλοξενεί μια ομαδική εικαστική
έκθεση, καθώς και ένα δημόσιο πρόγραμμα γεμάτο δράσεις, περφόρμανς, εργαστήρια και ομιλίες.
Η έκθεση εμπνέεται από τα θεωρητικά εργαλεία των Κοινών, επαναπροσδιορίζοντας την ιδεατή ελευθερία ροής και ανταλλαγής αντικειμένων και γνώσης μέσα σε ένα διαρκώς μεταβαλλόμενο περιβάλλον. Σε μια εποχή που χαρακτηρίζεται από την πίεση της παραγωγικότητας, την εξασθένηση της φαντασίας και τον περιορισμό της ελευθερίας κίνησης, οι πρακτικές των Κοινών γίνονται το υπόβαθρο μιας νέας αίσθησης προσανατολισμού, ευελιξίας και ανοιχτότητας στη σωματική εμπειρία του χώρου, του χρόνου και των αντικειμένων. Σύμφωνα με την θέση της Sara Ahmed, διεκδικώντας την οικειότητα μέσα στο ανοίκειο, ανοίγουμε τα εαυτά μας στη δυνατότητα νέων εντυπώσεων, νέων τρόπων εξερεύνησης όσων μέχρι πρότινος έμοιαζαν στατικά και άκαμπτα. Το τραπέζι παύει να είναι απλώς ένα μέρος που τρως, γράφεις, ή ξεκουράζεσαι.
Τα συμμετέχοντα καλλιτεχνά προχώρησαν ένα βήμα παραπέρα, τολμώντας να κοιτάξουν κάτω από το τραπέζι· να διερευνήσουν την ευθραυστότητα και την απαλότητα ενός αντικειμένου που άλλοτε φαινόταν σταθερό και συμπαγές, ανιχνεύοντας την προέλευσή του και τις ιστορίες όσων συγκεντρώθηκαν γύρω του. Το τραπέζι μεταφράζει τις κοινοτικές πρακτικές σε ευκαιρίες αποσαφήνισης του αστικού συστήματος, προσκαλώντας μας να
αναπτυχθούμε ως συλλογικός οργανισμός και δυναμική κοινωνική δομή που παράγει νέα νοήματα και
κατευθύνσεις μέσα στη σύγχυση.
Το τραπέζι είναι μεγάλο και είναι καλό. Μας χωράει όλα.
